Introduction to Architecture
ARCH 131 Course Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays. 12:20 pm - 1:10 pm.

Course Description: Intended to familiarize non-architecture students with the art and science of architecture. The fundamentals of plan, section, and elevation, the primary elements that comprise an architectural form; basic organizational principles; the ways in which we perceive architectural space; and the various concepts of function in relation to form will be included among the topics to be covered, using examples from numerous times and cultures as well as from the contemporary Cornell campus.
Additionally, lectures will treat how architecture features in popular culture; how landscape and architecture interact; and how anyone might meaningfully filter the built environment using analytical tools such as the diagram. Course readings will include on-line resources (including radio interviews) and selections on closed reserve at the library. Evaluation will include quizzes, midterm exams and attendance.
Open to non-majors only.

Concentration in Architecture for Non-Majors The curriculum for students in the concentration in architecture program for non-majors totals a minimum of 14 credits hours, including 8 credits of required courses and 6 credits of elective courses. Grades must be C or better in all courses.
Please note that it is recommended that students wishing to enroll in an architecture course must attend the first class, at which time the professor will determine whether there is space in the course. Course enrollment priority is given to architecture majors.

ARCH 110: Introduction to Architecture - Design Studio Offered during the six-week summer session only (3 Credits)
OR
ARCH 103: Elective Design Studio Offered during the fall semester only
(6 credits, the additional credits can not be used to fulfill other concentration requirements)

- 1 History of Architecture & Urbanism Course
ARCH 181: History of Architecture I Offered in the fall only (3 Credits)
