Welcome from Dean Kleinman

Dean Kent KleinmanWelcome to Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. The College is home to more than 700 students and about 100 faculty dedicated to the study of the constructed environment. A small and vital college in one of the nation’s foremost universities, AAP has developed some of the most influential design thinking and making in the country. We are deeply and historically committed to the belief that art and design are simultaneously intellectual and material practices, and that leadership in cultural production — art, architecture, or planning — demands both deep expertise in a specific discipline and wide knowledge in the liberal arts. For this reason, AAP students and alumni are typically known for two qualities: incredible passion for their chosen field and unbounded curiosity for everything else. AAP is a good home for such individuals.

Cornell’s Ithaca campus is the physical and academic center for AAP, but given the global nature of so many issues facing designers today, it is apt that the College has extended its reach to include permanent facilities in Rome and New York City as well as continuously evolving opportunities for international and domestic study. You will find that we are active on many fronts, including the construction of Milstein Hall, an inspired 43,000 square foot studio building designed by Rem Koolhaas that will have a transformative effect on the life of our College. But nothing is more transformative or inspiring than the creative work of our students. If you feel that AAP is the kind of academic environment in which you will thrive, do not hesitate to contact us. Or better still, come for a visit.
