Liberal Studies in Rome

General Information
Who May Apply?
Cornell in Rome accepts Cornell students from outside the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning each year, as well as visiting students from other colleges and universities. These spaces are reserved for students who, while not majoring in architecture, art, or planning, have serious academic interest in these areas.

Course Requirements
There are no mandatory course requirements in Rome for students in the liberal studies category. They are free to create a full-time curriculum by choosing courses in art history, architecture history, Italian, drawing, and photography. If accepted for a spring semester, it is also possible to choose from several courses offered by the Department of City and Regional Planning, including 20th-Century Italy: Politics and Society, the Regional Question, and Italy and the European Union.

The program is ideal for students who want a well-rounded exposure to these disciplines within the context of nearly 3,000 years of history. The application deadline is December 15 of the year preceding participation in the program for all out-of-college and off-campus students. Late applications will continue to be reviewed if space permits. Generally, liberal studies students are admitted more frequently for the fall rather than spring semesters.

Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture is where architecture, art, and planning meet: it concerns itself with the built environment, aesthetic ideals, and human activity, including the history and culture of a community. For students majoring in landscape architecture, the Cornell in Rome curriculum offers a range of courses that help achieve that synthesis.

Required landscape design studio credits can be obtained through the architecture studio, with approval from Cornell in Rome faculty and a student's landscape architecture adviser. Cornell landscape architecture students may also apply to the art studio in Rome.

Landscape Architecture Application Requirements

Outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in landscape architecture may participate in Cornell in Rome. Students may apply to the architecture design studio or fine arts studio. Transfer credit is granted upon successful completion of the term. Landscape architecture students should be prepared to do some independent work. Interested students should consult the study abroad advisor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and receive approval by the chair. A portfolio review is required.
