Bamboo Installation at the Venice Biennale’s International Architectural Exhibition 2006

This installation demonstrates an unusual bamboo construction technique that is unique to Hong Kong. Made up of 500 bamboo ladders tied together with a traditional hand-knotting technique, it resembles the solidity of a Chinese Fortress. A gap that serves as an entrance splits the structure in two, weakening the lateral forces of each side. Thirty red neon tubes represent the 30 days in a Lunar month. A floor of red mirror reflects and duplicates the structure. The black lacquered bamboo represents Hong Kong heritage, and the red neon and mirror represent our city’s vibrancy and energy.

As part of the tourism revival campaign, the Hong Kong Tourism Board organized a month-long activity around the theme of the Mid-Autumn Festival during September 2003. One of the signature elements of the campaign was the commissioning of a design for Hong Kong’s biggest-ever lantern display. The lantern was to showcase the uniqueness of Hong Kong as a travel destination and to promote the international image of the city. The design was to be selected through an open competition.

Being an outdoor display, the Lantern Wonderland had to be weatherproof and able to stand up to the rigors of a constant stream of visitors. The feasibility and practicality of translating the design into actual production in under seven weeks was a major consideration for contestants.
This showflat shall showcase a modern living lifestyle that’s both contemporary and luxurious in this 1,026m2 house.  Works include design of the exterior garden area.
