Henry Richardson is a professor of architecture. He is a licensed architect, urban designer, and nationally certified city and regional planner. He currently teaches in the areas of architecture and urban design, computer graphics, and real estate development. In addition to Cornell, he has taught and lectured in several schools in the U.S. and overseas  including in Ghana, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, South Africa, and Mexico. In addition to teaching Richardson has held several positions in higher education administration including associate and assistant deanships and  chair in architecture. He has also been faculty coordinator for Cornell’s Low Cost Housing and Urban Settlement Group, and director of Career Explorations in Architecture.

Richardson’s research experience encompasses roles as principal investigator of several projects including:

  • the development of PC-based CAVE (Computer Assisted Virtual Environment) technology for teaching architecture with funding from Cornell and a major software developer;
  • a 5-year grant for the improvement of undergraduate and graduate architecture theses from the National Endowment for the Arts;
  • AIA Research Foundation and the Department of Energy’s Solar America Cities Program’s Research on Energy Futures for the Built Environment; [AG13]
  • USAID summer institute for training midlevel professionals from developing countries in innovative approaches to affordable urban settlements;
  • the study of pre-World War II Bauhaus housing in Germany.


His publications include: Energy Conscious Design (AIA Research Foundation) and Post Colonial Cities in Africa.

Richardson practices architecture, urban design, and planning internationally and has consulted on many projects such as the Phase 1 Design for Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, Nasco City outside of Lagos, several Vivienda Bajo Costo (Low cost Housing Projects in Puerto Rico), Community 8 in Tema, Ghana, and Jabel Omar New City in Saudi .
