Alumni Profile

Savitri Bisnath

M.R.P./Ph.D. 1996/2002

"Cornell is intellectually vibrant, in and out of the classroom," Savitri says. "For my concentration in international development, it was helpful to have faculty and students who had lived and worked around the world. I also got to interact with visiting heads of state and government, policy makers from U.N. agencies, and scholars in international planning.

"I had access to one of the best library systems in the world for my Ph.D. work on how development planning and trade liberalization policy are linked."

education

Planning appealed to Savitri as a career because it combined community engagement and economic equity. She enrolled at Cornell for both her degrees because of the quality of the faculty and the university’s strength in international studies.

work

World poverty and malnutrition are the challenges “Savi” faces as a coordinator in GAIN’s Investments and Partnerships Program. Her goal: to eliminate disease-causing vitamin and mineral deficiencies among one-third of the world’s people within 10 years.
