Student Profile

A critical comparison of two groundbreaking preservation projects in the Steel City, this survey considered the redevelopment of Station Square and the Union Project from an economic, community development, and social outcome perspective. Both projects seek to create and sustain wealth within their communities, and incorporate the rehabilitation of important structures as a means of grounding their efforts within the cultural fabric of place. Though the means to this common end differ in the two projects, in both cases rehabilitation has been a component of community re-investment rather than an end in and of itself.

Nathaniel Guest

M.A. Historic Preservation Planning 2011

Nathaniel Guest is pursuing a dual degree in law (Temple University, Philadephia) and historic preservation planning (Cornell). Originally from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Nathaniel is active in preservation causes in his home state and is leading an effort to preserve the sprawling campus of the former Pennhurst State School and Hospital as a memorial to those confined there, and as an example of socially and environmentally responsible re-use. See www.preservepennhurst.org. Nathaniel hopes to continue to work in preservation advocacy after graduation, particularly in the areas of policy and outreach. A train enthusiast, Nathaniel works as a steam locomotive engineer at the Strasburg Rail Road in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and is currently working to preserve the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown, Pennsylvania.

Other preservation work includes the Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance, founded by Nathaniel Guest.
