Student Profile

One of my proudest moments at Cornell was working with the Hamlet of Varna on maintaining its public bus service. Varna is a small community on the eastern edge of the Cornell campus that is isolated from the rest of Ithaca and Tompkins County. The residents are mostly elderly and low-income families who cannot afford private transportation and are dependent on public transportation. Through my class on Geographical Informational Systems (GIS) I researched and mapped Varna’s population and demographics, and worked with the community to show the local transit system, TCAT, that continued service was vital to the community and neighboring areas.

B.S Urban and Regional Studies 2011

The Urban and Regional Studies (URS) program at Cornell has given Javier Alvarado numerous opportunities to develop leadership skills and apply the knowledge to real-world projects. Last summer Javier lived in Peru and organized a medical conference with a classmate. Through the Design and Planning Club, he worked with graduate students on a national design competition where his team placed second. As part of the URS program, he has studied American cities and the issues they face, including New York City during a 2009 summer internship. The small size of the city and regional planning department makes classes intimate and engaging. Javier believes this has allowed him to develop as a leader through organizing diversity recruitment events and mentoring younger students.
