Student Profile

Through the Cornell in Washington Program I spent a semester in Washington, DC, where I interned for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration as a policy analyst. My research focused on using public works as a means economic development to help our economy recover from the current recession. Throughout this experience, I have learned a great deal about urban planning, economic development, and social justice. With one more year of college left, I am excited for the opportunity to fully employ the skills that I have been able to acquire from my time as a student in the URS program.

Khaleel Atiyyeh

B.S. Urban and Regional Studies 2010

Before graduating from high school, Khaleel Atiyyeh came to the determination that he was committed to make his hometown of Newark, NJ, a better place. When first applying to colleges, Khaleel was daunted by the plethora of schools from which to choose. After inquiring more about Cornell’s College of Art, Architecture, and Planning, he learned that the Department of City and Regional Planning had done fieldwork in Newark. He was sold from that point on.

The number of off-campus programs also impressed Khaleel, especially the opportunities to study and work abroad.  Currently a senior, he has studied abroad in Brazil for a summer and Italy for a semester through the URS major. He also traveled to Jamaica as a consultant for economic development, in an effort to build partnerships with nonprofit and government entities through an organization that was recently started on Cornell’s Campus, Jamaica Difference.
