My artistic practice employs photography and digital imaging, with a keen interest in observation and interpretation. My work often engages architectural and landscape subjects, using elements of scale, perspective, light, color, and abstraction to create new interpretations. At present, I am working on a multimedia representation of the 18th century astronomical observatories built in India by Jai Singh.
My teaching encourages students to discover the themes that interest them most, while providing them with tools to both express and deepen their engagement. I incorporate various methods typical to studio instruction, and balance historical and critical perspectives gained through readings, museum/gallery visits, and slides with criticism and discourse centered on each students’ work. I encourage independence and responsibility consistent with the students’ level of experience – treating the studio as a place for intensive study, experimentation and personal growth. Over the years, I have found the practice of observation and critical examination inherent in my own creative activity to be an essential ingredient in studio teaching.
education
My background includes a B.A. Undergraduate Scholar from CWRU in 1972 and an M.F.A. in Photography from Ohio University in 1984. In the early 1970’s, I studied with photographer Minor White, developing an appreciation for his theory of “conscious photography and the creative audience.” From 1972-1980, I operated a successful business in advertising photography in Cleveland. While not a direct influence on my studio teaching, this professional experience proves invaluable when counseling students on career issues.
work
I am currently developing a multimedia project about the 18th-century astronomical observatories built in India by Sawaii Jai Singh of Jaipur. Located on the web at , the project will serve as a virtual museum and study center, making these unique historic sites available to a world audience. Jantarmantar.org is distinguished by its interdisciplinary thrust, engaging diverse fields in the arts and sciences, and by its use of computer-based media for visual interpretation. I also exhibit prints and installation pieces based on my work with the observatories, and am collaborating on projects for science education through the Cornell Theory Center’s SciCentr program, the Ithaca Sciencenter and the Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi. I expect the project to reach its finished form in early 2007. In 2005, Margaret Corbit and I received support from the Faculty Innovation in Technology Program, an initiative of the Provost’s office, to develop an interdisciplinary course using new technologies, called “Playing with Space and Time”. The course was offered in Spring 2006. In 2006, we received a second round of support to develop the course further, and the next version, “Studio in Space and Time”, will be offered in Fall 2007.
