Application Process
Students apply for full course loads for one semester or two consecutive semesters (when space is available). Each student, in collaboration with his or her faculty adviser, is responsible for organizing a course schedule that meets his or her curricular requirements.
Courses
Courses in architecture, art, and planning for majors and non-majors are available; students choose from courses in Italian language, Italian culture, history of art, history of architecture, architecture theory, drawing, and photography. Courses are easily applied to graduation requirements, and participation in the program does not necessitate extra semesters of study or delay graduation. Participation in study abroad does enhance graduate school applications.
Deadlines
Applications should be submitted well in advance of the intended semester abroad. The deadline for the following academic year's fall and spring semesters is November 1 for Cornell students and January 15 for off-campus applicants. Accepted students must confirm their enrollment by February 15.
LATE APPLICANTS
Late applications will be reviewed through April 1 for fall terms and October 1 for spring terms.
Who May Apply
Participation in Cornell in Rome is strongly encouraged for students within Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. The curriculum also is of particular interest to students of art history, landscape architecture, and classics. Students interested in urban studies or city and regional planning, or who are majoring in a related social science curriculum such as anthropology, sociology, history, government, international studies, political science, or geography, are strongly encouraged to apply to the Urban and Regional Studies component of the Rome curriculum. Cornell in Rome also is open to all other students at Cornell and other universities who meet the program's admission requirements.
General Requirements
All prospective participants must have completed the first two years of their curriculum requirements and be in good academic standing (as determined by their respective departments) before applying to Cornell in Rome. Early planning, during freshman or sophomore year, is strongly encouraged. All applicants are required to submit a preliminary outline of their intended studies.
Cornell students outside the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning must obtain approval from their academic adviser, department chair, and study abroad dean prior to applying for admission to the program.
Non-Cornell students must include an official transcript, a statement outlining their interest in the program and how study with Cornell in Rome will assist in meeting their educational objectives, and two faculty letters of recommendation with their application. Accepted students then become visiting (transfer) students for one semester through the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning Office of Admissions. Non-Cornell students interested in the six-credit architecture studio or advanced art studio courses must submit a portfolio.
All applicants are admitted with consideration of academic standing and seniority. A wait list is compiled for any remaining applicants. After the confirmation deadlines have passed, available openings are offered to students on the list.
Application forms
Application forms are available from the program office or online. (See the link to the current application form in the left-hand menu.)
Passports and Visas
A valid passport is required for all students traveling to Italy. Additionally, the Italian government requires a visa for all visits longer than three months for non-European Community residents.
Passport application is made through the local county clerk’s office. The cost is about $65, and processing requires approximately five to eight weeks.
Visa applications may be made through the Cornell in Rome program office. Detailed instructions are distributed to students several months before the applications are due (November 1/May 1).
