Security Deposits
Students are bursar-billed $500 which is applied toward various expenses during the term. Possible typical charges include computer printing and Internet fees, the required Italian residency permit and Italian state health insurance for medical emergencies, course packets, Italian language course activity fees, 24-hour internet, and local telephone service in apartments, etc. In the rare instance of apartment or palazzo damages, an appropriate fee will be deducted from the $500 balance and/or an additional amount may be charged. Failure to return apartment and/or palazzo keys will result in forfeiture of security deposit funds. Any unused funds from the $500 deposit will be applied to the student's bursar bill for the following semester, or will be returned in the case of visiting students.
Note that typically all of the $500 is used by students during a semester. If a student has incurred expenses beyond $500, charges will appear on the student's bursar bill in the term following a Rome semester.
Financial Aid
For installment billing, please contact the Cornell Installment Plan Office directly at (607) 255-2336 or
uco-bursar-mailbox@cornell.edu.
Rome expenses will not be automatically added to your monthly bill.
While tuition is the same in Rome as in Ithaca, study abroad does require additional funds to cover items such as a round-trip ticket to Rome and field trip travel.
For Cornell students, these additional costs are factored into their total financial aid package for the year. The Cornell in Rome office will inform the Financial Aid office of the student’s plans to study in Rome. Depending on the structure of the aid package, a revised award with additional grants and/or loans to cover these additional costs will be sent. Submit all forms as usual for financial aid consideration.
Parents should complete all the required annual financial aid forms through the Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment in Ithaca as usual, or through his or her home institution.
A limited number of work-study positions are available in Rome and are awarded based on need. Students seeking work in Rome must make a request to both the Financial Aid office and the Cornell in Rome program office the semester before their intended semester of study in Rome.
Additionally, AAP has specific scholarships and prizes available for study abroad in Rome and all eligible Cornell students will be considered. No application is required. The Bean Prize, awarded annually by the art department to several art students, is granted on the basis of a portfolio competition in March/April of each year. Art students apply directly to the art department for this prize.
Visiting students are not eligible for workstudy, scholarship, or prize opportunities through Cornell, though consortium agreements that allow loans to transmit from the home school through Cornell may be arranged.
If you need further information, please contact the Cornell in Rome business manager Donna L. Stevens at (607) 255-5238 or
