Regional Science is a multidisciplinary field that explores how geographic location and spatial relationships influence social, economic, and political processes.

Cornell’s M.S. program in Regional Science will not be accepting applications for fall 2026 admissions. Please check back for further updates regarding future application cycles.

The Master of Science in Regional Science (M.S. RS) program at Cornell provides instruction in spatial, interregional, and location theory and the use of analytical techniques to inform regional development and planning.

Program graduates are well-positioned for careers as educators, researchers, and policy analysts in national governments, academic institutions, corporations, and international organizations, and prepared for Ph.D. programs in areas of public policy, economics, or planning.

Curriculum

The M.S. RS requires four semesters of coursework plus a master’s thesis. Coursework options are flexible and adapted to thesis work and the student’s background and interests.

Possible course options:

  • Regional science theory and practice
  • Methods for spatial economic and demographic analysis and regional economic impact analysis
  • Applied economics and econometrics
  • Statistics and data analytics
