Michel Carlana: Building the Road

Abstract
Building the road is an ambiguous title. It is intended as a personal way of reflecting on what has been learned so far and, at the same time, drawing attention back to public space, which, for Leon Battista Alberti, was represented by the road in architecture. Publishing projects, teaching, international competitions, and direct commissions are among the tools used to explore this valuable theme, which the studio views as an entirely Italian legacy from which to learn and reflect. Seen in this light, architecture, perhaps more than "saying", must return to "giving".

Biography
Michel Carlana (Ph.D., Architect), Luca Mezzalira (Architect), and Curzio Pentimalli (Architect) founded Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli in 2010. They are graduates of Università Iuav di Venezia, a university with which they currently entertain collaborations and where they undertake research and teaching activities. In parallel to this academic activity, they engage with the architectural profession through participation in international competitions and local job orders.
