Monumental Stair Restoration

Safety, History, and Longevity

The stair at the main entrance on the south-facing side of Sibley Hall is in need of repair to ensure the safety of everyone coming and going from this central building at AAP. This project is currently in the pre-design phase and is anticipated to be completed in August 2025. 

The monumental stair restoration project will entail outfitting the east and west exterior masonry stairs with granite risers and treads approved by the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Committee, renovating the landings with historic tile that preserves original character, and replacing or refurbishing the sandstone sidewalls while adding a snowmelt system for safety and longevity.

Fall 2024

Last fall, HKK, renowned for its expertise in historic preservation and renovation, was selected as the lead design firm for this important project. With this project, we are prioritizing the following:

  • Safety Enhancement

    • Implementation of security cameras
    • Installation of key card access system
    • Integration of snow melt system for winter safety

  • Historical Preservation

    • Maintaining the iconic architectural character
    • Preserving historic design elements
    • Ensuring authenticity in renovation approach

  • Long-term Durability

    • Incorporating sustainable materials
    • Enhancing structural integrity
    • Implementing weather-resistant features
